Child and Youth Protection

The policies, programs and services that are part of the Safe Environment Program of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia are summarized in the brochure Creating a Network of Prevention and Protection. This brochure also provides parents with information and resources concerning the personal safety of their children.

Training for Staff & Volunteers

All priests and deacons, as well as parish staff, and volunteers who have regular contact with children, must attend Safe Environment training. This training provides those involved in ministry and service to children with a greater understanding of their role as adults in our Church to be: protectors of children, models of appropriate behavior and relationships, and advocates for those who are most vulnerable.

Electronic Communications Training

Every individual involved with our youth in their ministry within the parish must also receive training regarding the new communications standards in order to maintain in compliance with the Safe Environment requirements and continue in ministry with youth. These standards address email, text, Facebook, and social media when used for communication with minors.

Mandated Reporter Training

The Mandated Reporter training is required for all clergy, volunteers and employees of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia who during the course of their ministry come into regular contact with children. Regular contact is defined by the Archdiocesan policy as once a week.

On-line Mandated Reporting of Suspected Child Abuse training is now available in English and Spanish to provide mandated reporters of suspected child abuse an overview of their responsibilities under Pennsylvania law and Archdiocesan policy.

The U.S. Bishops' Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People also involves instruction for parents and guardians. A mailing to all parents with children in our Religious Education Program included Practical Advice for Parents On Preventing Child Sexual Abuse (a document in pdf format).

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia provides comprehensive assistance to anyone who as a minor was sexually abused by a priest, deacon, teacher, employee or representative of the Archdiocese. Parents, guardians, children and survivors of sexual abuse are invited and encouraged to contact the Archdiocese.

The contact will be a confidential consultation with a Victim Assistance Coordinator who is a licensed social worker. Our Archdiocese is committed to assisting victims in the pursuit of emotional and spiritual well-being.
